2008
This thesis examines the contribution of ‘ethnic' background to the school experiences of educationally and socially disadvantaged students in the senior years of high school (n=927). To investigate the role both of ethnic identification and its interplay with institutional factors, a comparative analysis of secondary student experiences in two national settings was undertaken. The case of Turkish-background students in Australia and France suggests that the influences of ethnic identity are thoroughly transformed from one setting to the other by distinctive pedagogical structures. Streaming and severe academic judgement in France lower academic self-esteem, while creating resentment and so…

Améliorer l'école
2006
2004
This article presents the main results of a study that evaluates and analyzes the influence of social composition of schooling context -termed "school mix" in English-language literature- on pupils' progress and some of their attitudes, as well as on certain teacher judgments, at the primary school and 'seconde' [second form (GB)/tenth grade (US)] 'lycée' (high school) levels. The influence of school mix on pupil progress in a given year seems slight. Moreover, the results show significant contextual effects on pupils' occupational aspirations, some of their attitudes, and teacher expectations and demands. It remains to be seen, however, how best to apprehend the way effects of context accu…

: The pupils' learning in their context : the effects of the composition of the school environment
2003
Whilst we admit to recognising the contextualised character of pupils' learning, the no less essential influence of the parameters of the school or social context remains a relatively unemplored field. Of course, the mobility of school effectiveness amply demonstrates the influence of the school of class attended by the pupils on their progression. But in the search for general factors of effectiveness, this trend has had few questions asked of it concerning the relationship with the characteristics of the pupil public. However, all work carried out on the impact of the forms of grouping of the pupils shows that both the average level of the group and the social composition (known in the An…
